OPEN STUDIO SAN DIEGO is a regional exhibition of artist studios held in October. 2017 is the third annual program. Artists will participate in a month long group exhibition at The Studio Door with a public reception on October 7th. The following weekend of October 14th and 15th, artists will welcome colleagues, art lovers and patrons into their studios. The public will plan their own self-guided tours of participating artists. Open Studios San Diego allows visitors to map out their own route to see as many studios as they wish. The tours are free to the public. Most studios have an artist demonstrating their techniques and all studios have art for sale.
Galleries, Museums, Art Stores and NonProfits are welcome to participate in the tours. Gallery space at The Studio Door will be allocated to participating artists. Non-artist participant may contribute to community table or make other arrangements with The Studio Door on a one-by-one basis.
Painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist book, ceramics, stain glass and sculpture. Work must be the artist’s original work.

SELF GUIDED STUDIO TOURS

Studio Artists, Art Centers and Art Galleries in San Diego County whom have a large enough body of work and large enough studio space for a successful presentation. The artist must have a website and an e-mail address. Artist must have a resale license and be responsible for collecting and paying sales tax. Artist must be able to provide proof of insurance for liability within a week of the artist notification date. It is recommended that each artist has a business license either from the city of their operations or County of San Diego.
Additionally, artist must have worked in their medium for at least two years and be selling their work to the public, either on their own, in craft shops or galleries, or through exhibitions or art fairs. All work must be the original design of the artist. The essential work required to make each finished piece must actually be done by the artist. Any commercially produced parts used in a work must play a subordinate role and may not be sold separately.
The Studio Door reserves the right to inspect studios to ensure compliance with regulations. The Studio Door reserves the right to refuse any entry if artist does not meet eligibility requirements.
All submissions for this show are handled by Patric Stillman, Director of The Studio Door. Artists are required to register.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION
September 17, 2017. Complete information including e-Mail link to website and submission of a minimum of 3-5 images of your studio and artwork is required. Payments must be made at time of entry to secure participation.
Art Centers or Galleries may upload logo or sampling of artwork to be used for marketing purposes. The Studio Door will contact organizations for further information.
Artist may submit 3 – 5 images. At least one should be a photo of your studio. Standard photos are okay [1,000 pixels on the longest side, 72 dpi].
The Studio Door may contact individual artists for high-res images, if needed, for marketing purposes.
Art Centers or Galleries may upload logo or sampling of artwork to be used for marketing purposes. The Studio Door will contact organizations for further information after deadline.
Cash, checks or credit cards are acceptable forms of payment. Checks are to be made out to The Studio Door.
Individual Artists participation fee $ 175
Non-Profit or Arts Center fee $ 250
Art Gallery fee $ 300
Two or more artists sharing a studio will both be charged the individual rate of $175 as they will be fully represented individually in the gallery exhibition, tour information and marketing.
If artist withdraws from Open Studio San Diego tours after September 17, $100.00 will be retained by The Studio Door from the participation fee. If the participant withdraws from the tour for any reason after brochures and posters are printed, there will be no refund.
NOTIFICATION TO ARTISTS
Artists will be notified a confirmation by September 19. If you do not receive notice by September 20, please check your email spam folder and contact The Studio Door if you do not receive an e-mail notification.
SELF GUIDED STUDIO TOURS DETAILS:
• Each artist agrees to be personally responsible for personal promotion in addition to The Studio Door advertising by notifying clients, patrons, friends, family, etc.
• All sales made by the artists during the studio tours are to remain the property of the selling artist and all costs and taxes incurred by the sale of the art by the artist are to remain the responsibility of the artist.
• Artist agrees to proof all information for brochure, map and advertisements by deadlines provide. If deadlines are missed, The Studio Door will print the information as is.
• Artist agrees to be open for the hours designated on the brochure and website.
Artist must agree to abide by the rules, policies and guidelines developed by The Studio Door. Failure to follow these standards and rules may result in expulsion from this year’s Open Studio San Diego or disqualification from participating in future tours.
INSURANCE AND LIABILITY
The Studio Door is acting as an agent to centralize information about the Studio Tours. Through participation, artist agrees that The Studio Door and its agents are not to be held liable for property and/or facilities of others nor injury to anyone on property other than their own.
MAPS and SIGNAGE
Participating artists will be included in a regional map and online. Each featured artist will receive a minimum of 10 free maps and 2 Open Studio San Diego tour signs. Google interactive and downloadable versions of the tour map will also be available online.
RECEPTION – EXHIBITION DETAILS:
EXHIBITION ARTWORK MAXIMUM SIZE
2-Dimensional Work: Height 9 feet, Width 4 feet – including frame
3-Dimensional Work: Must fit pedestal sized 16 inches x 16 inches or take up no more than 4 feet of gallery floor space.
EXHIBITION ARTWORK PRESENTATION
Artwork selected for the gallery show must arrive ‘ready to hang’ and be presented professionally. Framed artwork must use black wood or natural wood frame. No color mats. No glass, plexi only.
DELIVERY OF ARTWORK
Artists attending the optional Best Practices meeting on Saturday, September 23 at The Studio Door may bring their artwork a day early. Everyone else: Sunday, September 24, 4 – 5 PM or Tuesday, September 26, 10 AM – 6 PM (2017).
PICK-UP OF ARTWORK
Sunday, October 29, 4 – 5 PM and Tuesday, October 31, 10 AM – 6 PM (2017). Artwork left behind may be subject to a late fee of $50 per day and/or discarded by The Studio Door.
SALES OF RECEPTION – EXHIBITION ART ONLY
60% of the sale will go to the artists, 40% of the sale will go to the Studio Door. Items sold must remain on exhibit for the duration of the show. The Studio Door will mail a check to the artist for any sold artwork within six weeks after the close of the show.
USE OF IMAGERY
Artists grant The Studio Door permission to photograph selected works in gallery and in studios. The Studio Door reserves the right to use art images for marketing and publicity without compensation.
ABOUT THE STUDIO DOOR
The Studio Door is visual arts incubator, which includes an art gallery, working artist studios, and educational programs to assist artists participating in the creative marketplace. In addition to Open Studios San Diego, The Studio Door produces the regional and national exhibitions and the prestigeous 50 To Watch exhibition/ national publication. By submitting payment to participate in Open Studios San Diego, artist agrees to The Studio Door Artist Waiver and Release:
Artist acknowledges and agrees that his or her submission of an entry or entries to exhibitions at The Studio Door shall be deemed agreement by the Artist to the terms and conditions in the above prospectus. The Studio Door shall endeavor to ensure the safekeeping of all entries while on display at The Studio Door. However, the Artist acknowledges and agrees that he or she assumes all risk of the display of his or her artwork at The Studio Door. Furthermore, the Artist agrees that The Studio Door and its agents are not to be held liable for property and/or facilities nor injury to anyone on property other than their own. For good and valuable consideration, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged by the Artist, the Artist hereby releases The Studio Door, and shall defend, protect, indemnify, and hold harmless The Studio Door, their respective members, employees, agents, and authorized representatives from and against any claims, demands, losses, damages, expenses, injuries, liabilities, and cause of action arising from or in connection with exhibitions, open studios and related programming. The Artist also expressly waives any claims or cause of action that he or she has or may have in the future against The Studio Door, and their respective successors or assigns arising from or in connection with art exhibitions, artists tours or studio visits. The Artist is responsible for maintaining insurance, if desired, for his or her images/artwork, and acknowledges and agrees that insurance is not required to be provided by The Studio Door. For Open Studios San Diego, the Artist is also responsible for liability insurance, business licenses and reporting of sales tax.
* THE STUDIO DOOR reserves the right to refuse and work that differs from the image submitted by the artist or which is deemed inappropriate for display.
* THE STUDIO DOOR reserves the right to inspect studios to ensure compliance with regulations.
* THE STUDIO DOOR reserves the right to refuse any entry if artist does not meet eligibility requirements.
* THE STUDIO DOOR reserves the right to create or use digital images of all submitted artwork and to use those images for The Studio Door exhibition publicity and for archival and historical purposes.
* THE STUDIO DOOR reserves the right to opt artists in to use e-mail addresses for correspondence related to The Studio Door activities and artist opportunities, unless informed by the artist to opt out.
* Exhibitions held in gallery by The Studio Door will offer 60% of the sale will go to the artists, 40% of the sale will go to The Studio Door. Items sold must remain on exhibit for the duration of the show. The Studio Door will mail a check to the artist for any sold artwork within six weeks after the close of the show. By submitting to this call for submission, the Artist hereby agrees to the above waiver and release and shall comply with all standard terms and conditions of The Studio Door.
